My students enjoy quarterly novel studies within our classroom, but we are lacking a class set of the novel, "Fish in a Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. All of our novel studies correlate to the grade level standards, and give my students an opportunity to dig deep into a topic, and have discussions based on the topics within the story. One major thing that I stress within my classroom is tolerance for one another. The ability to have respect and acceptance for each one of our differences in the classroom. By putting ourselves in another person's shoes, we often have the ability to be more sensitive to each other, and are less likely to tease or bully. The novel, "Fish in a Tree", touches on many different personalities within a classroom, but one student in particular who has never quite felt as if she "fit in" within her classroom each year. "Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid". This is a quote by Albert Einstein, and is a poster I have hanging in my classroom. By completing this novel study, I hope my students not only have the ability to enjoy a good book, but learn to have grace, acceptance, and patience for one another. I hope that my students can see, and accept once another's differences and not judge one another based on "labels", but based on how these differences make our classroom unique. Lastly, I hope my students can not only use their newfound patience, love and acceptance within the classroom, but within the community.
