My students need 25 copies each of Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures and The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread, high quality literature in order to achieve maximum growth in their reading ability over the coming year to unlock their full potential. For the past 5 years, I have been a teacher of students with learning disabilities. This upcoming year, I am switching gears and will start my journey as a teacher of 4th grade gifted students. Although teaching students with learning disabilities is definitely a challenge, many people don't understand how much of a challenge teaching gifted students can be (I know, *scoff, laugh*, but it's absolutely true).
My students are highly intelligent and in need of a challenge, more challenging than what the core curriculum provides. They need a chance to dive into grade level appropriate texts without feeling bored or disengaged. These materials will launch our genre specific literature circles with a text that is chock-full of figurative language, beautiful imagery, and deep, meaningful themes that allow them to connect with the text on a much deeper level, but most importantly, it's closer to their reading level, it challenges their vocabulary, and it allows them a chance to interact with more than a couple of genres.
Books aren't exactly cheap, especially a class set of them. By giving my students these materials, reading will be gratifying and pleasant, and they will continue to work hard in our classroom as we launch into our genre specific literature circles, and hopefully learn to love and appreciate all different types of texts. Any help, no matter how big or small, goes a long way.
