My students would greatly benefit from the use of iPads to support their learning and increase their ability to share their knowledge. No one learns in the same way or at the same pace, but technology is a way to level the playing field, so to say. iPads can be used to provide students with individualized instruction based on academic needs without making it seem any different from their peers. Students can learn at their own speed and celebrate individual successes. In addition to individualizing students' academic needs, one of the exciting ideas I have for students' use of the iPads is building reading fluency. Students will record themselves reading, then watch and listen. The more they read, the more fluent they will become...AND they will have the recordings to prove it! As a teacher, I will also use these recorded readings as part of my data collection and to identify focus areas during face to face instruction. The keyboards will support my students who experience difficulty with the physical act of writing by providing an outlet to share their ideas without the added stress of letter formation. This is also a great bridge to the use of laptops in later grades, and in life. While I don't believe technology is a substitute for actual teachers teaching, I do realize that students of this generation are not the same students that our educational system and beliefs were founded on. Students today think and process information differently than I did as a child. Today's student expect to receive information quickly, and as a teacher, I aspire to develop their "new language" of technology in a meaningful and educational way.
