The majority of my students prefer to sit ANYWHERE other than their desks, and they're happiest when they are more comfortable. This year I am implementing flexible seating to accommodate their desires to have more seating options, make them feel more at home (who would want to sit in a hard chair at home all day?), and give us more room overall for activities involving movement. With flexible seating, students have the freedom to choose a seating option that suits them while they work. They can choose to sit on comfy pillows, at low tables, with lap desks, on a floor chair, lay on the floor with clip boards, or cozy up with a good book on a bean bag chair. My students who are constantly leaning back in their chairs will also benefit from the use of a wobble chair-and hopefully keep them safer! What's really fun about this is that students can change their seating option after each lesson. This approach also teaches responsibility as students learn how to properly use the options or lose this exciting privilege. My hope is that this engaging and fun approach will create a successful and safe learning environment for all of my students, and be a class they can be proud to be a part of!
