Young children need safe opportunities to practice appropriate social skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Children learn best through engaging in play and participating in games and activities. I need adequate materials to provide appropriate opportunities for counseling activities. Social emotional games and activities will help my students to develop skills that are essential for healthy development and provide the foundation for academic success. I use dolls houses with my students to help them explore and process difficult feelings and situations in a fun and imaginative way. Students often act out scenarios with the dolls which can give me insight as their counselor to help them with things that are bothering them. I like to play games with my students to lighten the mood. Children don't often come right out and tell me what is bothering them. By playing simple games, like checkers and battle ship, I provide opportunities for students to relax and feel at ease before engaging in a counseling session. I use skills specific counseling games to teach skills (social skills, coping skills, and anger management skills) which are essential for healthy social emotional development. Oftentimes, children will come to see me when they are angry and having challenges controlling their emotions. I use materials like sand timers and therapy putty to help them calm down. Watching the sand slide through the bottle neck can be very calming. It also serves as a visual reminder for students when sessions are coming to an end. I use therapy putty as a stress release activity with my students. Some children use the putty like a stress ball and squeeze it, while others let it melt onto their hands. I like to provide my students with comfortable beanbags to sit on when in counseling sessions.
