I would like to have this waterfall fountain in my classroom for a variety of purposes. Every classroom in my school has a "Take a Break" space. This is for students who are upset or having difficulty coping. They can take a break and practice strategies to get themselves back to a place where they can learn and engage with other students. The calming effects of the sounds of water would be so soothing for my students. Students can sit by the waterfall, take their deep breaths and self-sooth to be ready to learn. My independent reading area is set up as a camp, complete with a tent, chairs, pillows and a tree. The missing ingredient is the waterfall to create the complete reading escape. I also think that the noise of the water will create a more calm and soothing atmosphere in the classroom. During centers, the students tend to raise their voices. I'd like to use the fountain as a gauge for volume as well. Telling students that we should all be able to hear the fountain during centers will help them have a tangible cue that the volume is too loud. This will also promote self management on their part which will benefit them throughout their lives. I also wish to bring the outdoors, inside for my students. Living in a large urban city, the students need to increase their awareness of the natural world.
