There are hundreds upon hundreds of articles devoted to telling those in education how important classroom environment is to a student's development. We are often told in them how a simple change in seating arrangements or adding choices in places to work can greatly increase our students' chances for success. Creating an engaging classroom environment is essential to student success. Students often don't want to be at school because it feels like a jail cell to them so they do not always engage in the lesson or the activity. And, without that engagement, they cannot truly learn and grow. So this is why it is so important that I create an environment for them that they feel comfortable in. I want to create a learning environment where students can choose where they work best. I took the first steps to create this environment. I have bought several blankets to place on the floor for when they want to sit there. I created a student center that is just for them with all the possible tools they might need to work on any given project. However, to create the best place for them to work they need more and better choices. I want to increase the availability of work stations so as to accommodate as many learners as possible. The floor chairs and lap desks will give my students who constantly ask to sit on the floor a clean place to sit that they feel is theirs. The desks will provide alternative work stations for them to gather in groups to work collaboratively. This is the first step in creating an engaging learning environment for my students.
