I have a lot of students who spend more time moving in their chair and playing with things in their desk than paying attention. I have to constantly remind them or have them move to the floor to get them to focus. Last spring the "fidget spinner" happened and then students were busy playing. By supporting my project 28 current third graders will have the opportunity to sit, stand, bounce, wobble, or use the floor with a clip board to help them be successful in school. Sometimes other students can distract others and this impacts their own learning. This year, students will become self aware and make their own choices by advocating their needs. (We will practice this) I have chosen to use exercise balls, wobble stools, and floor mats (doughnuts). I have used exercise balls in the past ( I have 3 right now). The students love them. Right now they only use during read to self because I do not have enough for all to use. They sit and read on them. (I have to teach they how to use these as well, otherwise they will just bounce for 15 minutes and not work) The floor mats will help those students who want to get up and move and not be around others. I have a hard time focusing if someone near me is talking too. Using this tool students can also move up front and sit close to the board. They can also choose to sit on the floor during independent work. The stools will allow students to move and without making sounds. I plan to roll out the flexible seating the first day of school and MODEL, MODEL, MODEL. Students will practice how these tools work (we will practice what NOT to do as well).
