My classroom needs 100 journals (composition notebooks) and various writing implementS. We will use these materials to write every day. As a result of daily writing, my 6th and 7th grade students will reach more milestones and achieve a better understanding of writing mechanics within the school year. The best way for students to become better writers is simply by writing as often as possible. My students will need 100 journals, and pencils because the greatest growth that they see as writers can only happen if they write every day. The routine of writing everyday in a journal will develop their writing stamina, courage, and creativity in their writing. As their writing muscles are built, I will witness my students truly enjoying writing in their composition notebooks. It is a space for them to develop their own voice as writers, and to brainstorm and start many of their to-be-polished later drafts. Another facet the journals will serve is as a place to gather and organize information that my students learn daily. This aspect is crucial because they are still learning the individual elements of how to successfully produce structured and strong writing. In their journals they will practice various writing skills for different modes of writing. With these journals, by the end of the year, the students will be able to use these techniques in order to write more effectively for different purposes and to grow as individuals.
