  • Let's Get Social

    Funded Dec 5, 2023

I first want to express my sincerest gratitude for your considerations to donate to my project. A lot of my students love to read or have me read to them. Reading with each other is a great time for us to connect and share our thoughts. We also need support with being great friends and members of our communities and these books have bridged that gap so beautifully.

The first book that we read was "My Mouth Is A Volcano" and boy have we learned how to use our words in more responsible ways. "Personal Space Camp," also let us know that we can be happy to see each other but still respect each other's boundaries. I am so excited to see how my students grow and improve their relationships with each other.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hillard

  • Virtual Data Collection

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

First, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to each of you for donating to my project. It has been one of the most humbling experiences to receive these items from Donors Choose. Since I received my iPad and Apple Pencil, my virtual data collection has been so streamlined.

Prior to having these items in my toolbox, I struggled to keep track of and collect data in a smooth and efficient way, but having access to these pieces of technology has changed how my day functions. In addition to the other pieces of technology, my day to day virtual teaching experiences have been running so much smoother.

It has been so much easier for me to track progress since I have created the Google documents for each of my students to collect data. I can quickly see when goals need to be modified or when my students have mastered their goals. Thank you Donors Choose and all of the donors for helping me be a better Special Educator.

Again, thank you so much for the kindness and generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hillard

  • Calming Down Into Success

    Funded Nov 25, 2018

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all of you who found it in your hearts to donate to my project. I have wanted to create a calm down space for the students that I serve, but was so very limited with my resources. With the support both monetary and through shares on social media, I was able to create this space. Since receiving the materials, my teacher assistant and I have set up our calm down area with bean bags, carpets, fort builders, relaxing pillows, and tons of sensory items. When my students are struggling with their frustrations we talk through our strategies and use these items to help us de-escalate.

All of the students that I serve were very excited. Obviously, we had to teach them how to use the room and resources but once we explained the purpose, everyone was ready to go. I think some of them were more excited then the teachers. They have responded so well to the resources and programming that we have set up, that it has inspired us to add more things such as books, calming lights, and a tent.

Moving forward, it is my hope that we will continue to utilize the space as a tool to help us de-escalated to stressors and triggers that the students experiences. I would also like to use the space to hold groups to discuss effective strategies that we can use to manage our behavior and how we can display socially appropriate behavior to interact with our peers.

Again, thank you so much for believing in this project and deciding to help my students seek positive alternatives for their behaviors.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hillard

I am a Special Education teacher serving students in a Title I school. Many of the students I provide services to have learning disabilites in various subjects and struggle with challenging behaviors. All of the students in my school receive free breakfast and more than half of my school participates in the free and reduced lunch program. I support anywhere from 8-19 students on my caseload in an inclusion setting, but many of them are performing significantly below grade level and have challenging behaviors. My goal each day is to help them maintain consistency and routines and achieve their "just right" academic goals. Thank you for sponsoring my classroom.
