The FIA Library was closed for approximately a decade. During that time, the space filled up with discarded furniture, old computers, and unused classroom materials. Massive effort was taken to revive the library in the 2016-2017 school year, and thanks to those efforts, the library is back up and running for students. BUT WE STILL HAVE SO MUCH WORK TO DO! Collection development in the first year focused on manga and popular fiction that we knew would fly off the shelves, but the average book in our non-fiction section was published 18 years ago. That means most of our non-fiction books are older than our students! We also want to continue growing the library's capacity for supporting our students' learning and emotional needs, in a safe and supportive environment that they feel belongs to them, with activities and resources that transcend the books on the shelves. This project will help make that vision a realty in two ways: 1) It will add much-needed books to our non-fiction section in subjects that directly support hands-on learning and creating and 2) it will furnish the materials necessary to begin the first phase of our library makerspace. These books and supplies will be used to create maker-kits that students can use in the library for hands-on, self-directed creation and learning. We've taken care to include Spanish-language books in this order, and will be printing out instructions for all kits in Spanish (and Arabic, if possible) so that English learners won't face any barriers for utilizing the library makerspace.
