With a classroom of 21 diverse children, I need high-quality literature to reflect their diverse experiences and backgrounds. I believe all children should be able to pick up a book and see themselves in it. In this project, I have selected "Folktales" - fictional stories that come from other cultures to teach my children about parallel storylines and the way of other people around the world. This is a genre the children are currently learning about and remains relevant for the Common Core curriculum. I have selected seven books that have received the Coretta Scott King award, which focuses on social justice and non-violent change. Likewise, I have selected another seven book set that received the Pura Belpre award: an award presented to Latina/Latino writers whose work reflects Latino cultural experiences in an outstanding way for children. Likewise, I have included two adventurous tales of boys triumphing through challenges. Rosa Parks, Holocaust stories, Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes, The Poet Slave of Cuba, The Displacement of Native American people, Famous Native Americans, Growing up in Cuba, Afghanistan, and 1001 Inventions and Awesome Facts from Muslim Civilization are some of the other titles I find pertinent to my children's own lives, and necessary to prepare them for their journey after me.
By donating to my project, you are becoming the reason my children see themselves in the stories they read, and you are aiding our continued learning of social studies with a social justice lens. Thank you for extending the narrative, and supporting access to quality literature.
