I love building relationships with my students but even more so, I love helping them build relationships with each other. We constantly gather together in the mornings to talk about what is going on in our lives and what we're looking forward to in the day/week. A gathering area rug would do wonders to create an obvious communal area where children know they come to be heard. Kids love to talk, but they are also wonderful and compassionate listeners, a trait I try to build throughout the year. Many times, my students have been taught to listen but not necessarily how to respond to others. These moments talking together help practice conversation skills and also social etiquette within a conversation.
