Acquiring these books will expand my student’s minds, improve their reading, listening and writing skills. In first grade students are building their perceptions of the world; therefore, they need to learn early on that literature can be exciting and fun. These books will mainly be used during read-aloud time. Consequently, listening to literature improves student’s oral language and listening skills. After read aloud, students then transition to writing. These books will inspire students to creatively write and build their vocabulary. It is important to expose students to literature at a young age as it fosters students interest in books. Not only will students listen to the books, but they will be placed in the class library to be read and re-read. These books will also save me time. As a first year teacher this past year, I had a small library that I had built using only recycled books purchased from offer up and library sales. Last year I had an abundance of educational magazines, however, lacked Accelerated Reader books (books that students could take test on—AR). In turn, this year I hope to acquire more AR books. Finding affordable books was a struggle yet we persevered and constantly borrowed books from the library. As a graduate student at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) I was able to borrow books from the children’s library at CSULB. Unfortunately, sometimes the books were checked out or we had to wait for them to be shipped. All in all, acquiring these books will expand my student’s minds, improve their reading, listening and writing skills, and save me time looking for books at libraries. These books will be put to good use as many students will get the opportunity to read them.
