Located on the west side of Chicago, the Academy of Scholastic Achievement (ASA) is an Alternative High School serving at-risk youth. At ASA we offer students a better chance at an education through Competency Based Education with a special focus on project based instruction. My math classroom is often the place where students learn that mathematics is not to be feared. Whether it's building structures that can hold more than 150 pounds of textbooks using folders and glue or tackling complex real world problems, my students are learning to think critically and communicate effectively. I work to help my students remain focused on their educational goals as they battle the daily challenges of living in communities with high levels of gun violence and few opportunities. Our school theme of Social & Economic Justice directs many of my efforts to prepare my students for a successful future.
