This school year, I want to give my students new and hands-on experiences in STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Math). The items that I am requesting will allow my students to think critically in order to tackle challenges such as building bridges, houses and cars. This will be done in cooperative learning groups using the Design & Build Engineering Centers from LAKESHORE. Students will rotate in small groups to each center after an allocated time to tackle some building challenges. STEM education is active and focuses on a student-centered learning environment. Students engage in questioning, problem solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they address real life issues. For example, the Geoboards from LAKESHORE can be used to build 2 dimensional shapes and then they can build on those skills to create more intricate shapes. My students will have the added benefit of increasing their fine motor skills! LEGO can be used to teach mathematics, science, engineering, and even technology! One of the activities that will be used with the requested Lego 10697 Building Large Box Creator XXL are Math fact task cards. Students will use the task cards to identify the color and number of the requested blocks on each card and then they will solve. For example a task card might say 3 yellow Legos and 2 red Legos= ? The students will model the problem with the Legos and then record their answer on a paper.Engineering task cards might include a task to build their favorite fruit with Legos and ask a classmate to identify it. I believe that these items will ignite a passion for STEM that will follow them on their academic journey.
