Seventh grade students will dive into reading this year supported by class novels and group work; but the most critical work they will do is reading independently in a book they've chosen for themselves. In order for my students to be successful, they'll need to be able to choose a book that is within their grasp and highly interesting. My goal for my students is that they find books they love, and become recreational readers. As I've built my library, many of the used books I've received feature white characters living in suburban or rural communities. I am working to create a library that more accurately reflects the life experiences of students in Chicago. The donations for this project will fill our classroom library with books that are culturally relevant for my students. With more books that reflect their lived experience, I hope to instill a love of reading in my students, and keep them coming back for more. Plus, as they spend more daily minutes reading independently, they strengthen their vocabulary, build curiosity, broaden their scope of knowledge, and become stronger writers and readers.
