My students will benefit from a Scholastic Magazine subscription as readers and learners. They will be given the opportunity to read and learn about issues and current events throughout the world. Since the subscription includes the app, the many reading levels in fifth grade will have the opportunity to also listen to the articles. The headphones that my students need will give ALL of my students access to the information. Headphones will also allow for a full classroom to be able to work independently at their own pace, so that they are ready to come together as a group for discussion and collaboration. Not only will my students be able to learn about current events, but they will also build their critical thinking skills by analyzing non-fiction text, making connections, and building schema. Many of my students are not able to learn about current events via the news on television, and even if they could, it is usually not student friendly. Scholastic News makes news accessible to all learners and age-appropriate. It is filled with trending news, vibrant photos, enriching videos, and resources for comprehension and analysis of the text. Having Scholastic News in the classroom will give my classroom an opportunity to learn that going to school isn't only about learning basic facts and drills, it is about using real-world information to think critically, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively.
