The basis of this project is to ensure that students arrive to school ready to learn! According to the National Retail Federation, the average family spends more than $600 on children's clothing, electronics, and back-to-school supplies each year. And with school budgets dropping, the list of school supply families have to purchase keeps getting longer and longer. Their tools and materials will empower them to think globally as they conquer theme-based projects. Each item in this project is purposeful! A lot of learning is completed collaboratively with a flexible seating format. Materials and tools need to b accessible at all points throughout the day. Notebooks are used to persevere through word problems, respond to daily reading, word work, and recording scientific observations. In an effort to eliminate losing pencils, each student will receive a pencil bag filled with individual supplies (sharpened pencils, highlighters, erasers, dry erase markers, crayons) that they are responsible for each week. In a previous year, student engagement was increased when recording their thinking and working on individual whiteboards. The markers and colored pencils are great materials while they learn and create maps of Virginia. When working collaboratively, I can determine levels of student contribution using writing tools. Art supplies are necessary to assist students as they develop simulations. Scholars are requested to bring ear buds while working on learning pads to reinforce whole group instruction. Last, student binders, folders, tabs, and mail boxes promote organization and home communications. Each tool will lend itself to a scholar's daily success, both short and long term.
