  • Competitive Robotics Opportunities for All!

    Funded Feb 21, 2022

We had an amazing 2021-2022 season of competitive robotics at John Middleton Elementary School due to your generous contributions to our team. With the robotics kits you have helped us purchase, we were able to field a team of 5th grade students (5 girls and 5 boys) that competed in December. They were able to learn robot building techniques and coding through various activities of trying the challenges and missions of FIRST Lego league. In the spring after the competition was over, we opened up the club to all of our 4th and 5th grade students and had a class for students to try various build and coding projects!

When the students saw the kits, they were simply amazed that they could combine Legos, robots and programming into one! Students just wanted to try all of the activities and were disappointed only with the fact that there were only limited days to work on the robot. This year, Middleton Elementary will continue to enter in FIRST Lego League to compete and will continue to host various robot extracurricular classes! The students and staff are forever grateful for your support for our program!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cho

  • 3D Printer for STEAM Lab!

    Funded Aug 27, 2021

It has been about 4 months since we received our 3D printer in our STEAM classroom that was generously given to us from our amazing donors. So far, our 4th and 5th graders have been using the printer, while our younger grades have been anxiously waiting for their turn to print! With the 3D printer, it has brought so much excitement to the students in the world of design and additive technology. Students have really experienced how much fun and simple it is to design something on CAD software and then turn their files to print. At the same time, they are learning that not all designs work out, so they need to go back to their plan and figure out what they need to improve on. It is giving my students the real world application of iteration and looking continuously for ways to improve on their design!

What is most exciting for the students is to see their ideas turn into something tangible. They love that they now have the ability to create something like a toy for a friend or family member or something that can help improve the school or community in some way, whether it is creating a tool or a prototype for a new invention.

There are also some students who generally have not shown much excitement in school in the past that have asked about whether we will be using the 3D printer each week. These students are now looking for ways to use the printer that I didn't even think of, such as using it to design a new laptop stand for teachers or making bookmarks for students in the school! Thank you so much again to all the wonderful donors who helped me with this project. We are so grateful for your generosity and for helping build excitement for this new technology.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cho

  • Robotics for Life!

    Funded Feb 18, 2021

My students and I thank you so much for our Spike Prime Lego robotics kit! Since May, the students have been building various robots with the many pieces provided. The students have also used the kit to learn how to program their robot to perform various tasks and functions. They absolutely love the self-paced nature of the lessons found on the Lego website!

When the students first got the kit, they were so excited! This new kit provided a new way for students to build robots and gave them a chance to even try a new programming language, Python.

This fall, the students will be using the Spike Prime robot to compete in FIRST Lego league. For this international competition, the students have the build a robot to solve various Lego missions in a certain time frame. The students will be continuing to grow in their robotics skills and programming the next few months before their competition in December.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cho

Our Robotics Program in our school district has been a staple enrichment STEAM program for elementary and middle school students for 10 years now.  Since 2011, hundreds of girls and boys from ages 8-13 have participated in our programs, competed on FIRST Lego League teams, and have represented our town in various competitions and STEM events across Illinois. We have maintained this program due to various grants obtained over the years, district funding, and the generosity of parents. Since 2014, we have competed in FIRST Lego League and have allowed our diverse population of students at our schools to learn engineering, building, and programming.  Since then, we have been using the Lego EV3 Kits for competitions and school clubs.  Many of the robot controllers are starting to break down, and we have been on the lookout for new upgraded kits.  In 2020, a new robotics kit was introduced to the competition called Lego Education SPIKE Prime. After experimentation with this kit of updated robotics parts, we strongly believe this would continue to enhance the learning for our students participating in our programs.  Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we could not hold the usual fundraisers that would help us purchase upgraded parts.  We would be especially grateful for any help to purchase a new Lego Education SPIKE Prime kit for our competitive robotics teams to use for the next years. We would then take our old EV3 robotics kits we have now and continue to use them in free STEAM courses for more students in our district to take and our schools to have in their resource libraries and maker spaces.  This way, more of our students in the district can get involved in robotics and programming.
