Many of my students say that they hate to read, but when I find the right book for them and they read it for the first time, they usually continue to read. I am looking for high interest level books geared toward my student population in order to promote a love of reading. This will increase their vocabulary level, expose them to new ideas, and have a richer understanding of their world. I absolutely love the feeling I get when a student who says they hate to read finds a book that they absolutely love and gets excited about it! I also have my students complete many hands on activities and encourage frequent sharing of what they have learned and read. I find that they more they see, draw, write, and discuss subject matter, the better they comprehend the material. They also enjoy this a great deal more than traditional worksheets. (So do I!) These activities allow us to break down more complicated literary terms and concepts into real life (or from the book) examples that students can really understand!
