When I work, I want to be comfortable. At school I may work sitting at my desk, standing at my technology cart, or sitting on the floor. At home I move from the coffee table, the kitchen table, the couch, and my bed when I work. I don't always want to work sitting at a desk, so I am sure my students don't want to either. With this project, my students will have the ability to choose different places to work throughout the day. Research has shown that flexible seating provides students with opportunities to collaborate, think creatively and critically. Flexible seating provides movement throughout the classroom. Research shows that if students are moving in the classroom that they are more engaged, focused, and motivated to learn. Flexible seating also provides students with choice, which leads to better engagement and motivation as well. I am asking for wobble stools and cushions as two options in my classroom. With wobble stools, students will be able to move slightly in their seat, build core strength, and focus on their work all at the same time. Wobble cushions can be used on the floor or in a chair. The cushion will allow students to move slightly while sitting. The final thing I am asking for is plastic, durable book boxes. Without desks, my students will need somewhere to store their books and belongings. These boxes will travel with each student around the room as they choose their seat. I teach two rotations, so I've requested one class set that can be shared between the two classes. I believe that flexible seating will help me create a positive, collaborative, and comfortable classroom environment.
