I teach 4th grade math and science at a Title I school in Southwest Florida. About 70% of our students come from low income families. Our population is a wide mixture of cultures, races, ethnicities, and nationalities. It is common to see students living with or being raised by single parents, grandparents, or other relatives. We have students that come from homes with limited or no technology, homes where food is scarce, homes where clothing is limited and uniforms are worn multiple times in a week. But in spite of all this, our students drop it all at the door and are ready to learn and help others learn. Our students exhibit true empathy and respect for all others. My classroom is an innovative classroom, where many desks have been removed, students have choices for their learning space, and arts integrated strategies are the norm. Students are made to feel comfortable and safe, physically and emotionally.
