By exposing students to a wide range of characters and life styles they will be able to cultivate a sense of comfort and tolerance for ALL people. These books will act as a mirror for students to see themselves reflected in literature and be able to start imagining themselves doing things they may have never thought possible. I have found that when we are reading books that can either act as a mirror, for themselves, or as a window, into someone else's world that they know nothing about, the students engage in high levels of critical thinking and analyzing. These books will also allow students with the opportunity to see environments, countries, and people who are NOT like them. This will open the door for students to explore what they already know about other places and people and build on this knowledge in a positive constructive way. Through these pieces of literature we can set students up as problem solvers, inventors, and collaborators. At the end of the day, I want my students to understand and value their differences and the ways their differences can be a catalyst to new ideas, programs, or ways of being and these pieces of literature will point them in the direction to begin making these connections.
