Acquisition of this solar filter will allow our telescope to be used during the daytime when more students are present, rather than at invited evening viewings. This would include the August 21 total solar eclipse (partial from our location) as well as full sun viewing anytime. Earth Science classes would be able to safely view the sun anytime in order to make textbook and lecture topics come to life. These include things like solar prominences, faculae, sunspots, the solar cycle, and the composition of the Sun. It is one thing to see a picture in a book, but more impactful to be able to use scientific equipment to safely see it in real time.
