This project is intended to create a calming space for my students to curb their anxieties and stress so they can refocus on their academics. The COVID-19 pandemic tore down many old supports our students, who already have less autonomy, had. Students need to know that they are cared about as people, not just for their grades, and have a place they are safe when in need. Stress manipulatives, discussion cards, art supplies and minimal décor will support the room atmosphere for personal expression and mindfulness. I have always found these things to help a student open up to talking and working toward solutions and goals in healthy ways. In the past these items have been personally purchased and assistance to grow would be amazing.
I help provide material needs like school supplies, clothing, hygiene products and food. The addition of a freezer one in the student supply room would allow me to accept frozen goods and distribute them.
The goal toward supporting student base needs allows them to not need to worry about how they are going to get their next meal, a jacket, etc. With those needs covered they can work to succeed in school and be prepared for adult life. The American School Counseling Association outlines standards, I am aligning with:
1: Establishing development of the whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical well being.
2: Sense of acceptance, support, and inclusion for self and others in the school environment.
4: self confidence in the ability to succeed.
This will provide the tools to help students be able to not only transition into the world as it is now but to successfully overcome the challenges and in a healthy and positive manner.
Thank you for your consideration.
