Forensic Files: Lab Materials For Crime Solving
Funded Mar 13, 2018Thank you for funding this forensic science project. Using the resources I was able to purchase, I had materials for lab activities for almost every unit of my year-long science elective.
Students were able to study lab typing, soil samples, foot print impressions, and much more with hands-on activities that enhanced the experience greatly. Instead of just being stuck with text-based activities, many students have had the opportunity to put them in the shoes of forensic analysts, running many of the tests that would be run on evidence collected from crime scenes.”

A First Chance At Computer Science
Funded Aug 28, 2017We live in a mobile world. Think about how much time you spend on an electronic device like your cell phone, your iPad or other tablet, and your computer. How much do you know about the inner working of these devices? Have you ever wondered what makes them tick--the hardware and the layers of software?
Thanks for your generous donation, my students are getting the chance to learn these details!
As of today, each one of my students has created five different apps from scratch! They have created sound board apps, finger painting apps, and now an app that interacts with other programs on their tablets! Every day, I'm blown away at how they take to the fundamentals of programming then come up with brilliant, complex ideas on how to expand on their apps.
When given the opportunity to create their first creative app, so spent their lunch periods and time at home adding features and functions that I hadn't even taught them. I explained that some of their additions would be easier later as they learn more. A week later, I taught them how to use "abstractions" to simplify their program. I never thought I would hear the utterance "Abstractions are so cool! They make everything cleaner and easier." and yet I did!
For some of these awesome kids, this is the first AP class. For all of them, it's the first computer science exposure. The future job market is projected to need software engineers. The tablets you helped fund let these young men and women gain an appreciation for what goes on under the hood of the devices that are ever more a part of our lives. If even one of my 25 students goes on to find a career that is helped by their experiences, then your generosity and their hard work is all worth it!
I can't thank you enough, but I'll try at least one more time: Thank You!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Nagy
