Kids are constantly on cell phones, watching YouTube, playing video games (often violent games), and surfing the internet. Teachers and parents often complain that kids spend too much time in front of a screen. But why not take their natural inclination towards technology and turn it into creative space for children to interact with computers in a playful and creative way. The Makey Makey STEM classroom invention kit can be the key to doing this in our 5th grade classroom. This kit encourages students to use Engineering Design strategies and computer programing skills by turning normal, every day objects into touch pads. In many ways the sky is the limit on what they might invent using this kit but without a doubt, collaboration and student engagement will be high. There are two main ways I would use the Makey Makey kit in my classroom. The first would be open ended and allow for students to naturally gravitate towards areas of interest. They might create video games, music instruments, interactive storybooks, PE games, etc. There are so many things that the children could invent that it is difficult to narrow this down. The second way this STEM kit would be used in my classroom would be to create an interactive body systems t-shirt . The driving question would be "How can we use our knowledge of the human body, local experts, and computer skills to invent an interactive t-shirt to teach children about how to get healthy and increase awareness of illnesses and diseases that effect children in our community. The plan is to partner with UC Davis Childrens' hospital with the intention of working with faculty, patients, and families. The students will need to build relationships and start with a needs assessment.
