I have the privilege of working with a group of intelligent and curious students who really want to learn. Because I have had time with these students previously as their third grade teacher, I have a better understanding of what they need to succeed. Many of my students come from low income backgrounds and I also teach a some inclusion. Despite those differences, my students always work their hardest. I want to be able to provide a learning environment for them that not only meets their needs, but exceeds them. One of those needs is flexibility. My students need the ability to move and have choice. This was something we were not fully able to accomplish in my previous classroom, though they loved it when we tried. I have seen students who struggled to stay focused and on task complete activities without a problem when given the opportunity to do something as simple as sit on the floor instead of at a desk. It may seem odd to walk into a room of students sitting on exercise balls or laying on the floor, but research has shown that students who move are students who thrive. I will use these resources to create a comfortable and engaging work environment where my students can make their own choices about what works best for their learning styles. They will be able to choose from seats using pillows or cushions on the ground, at a table with bouncy balls, or at traditional desks fitted with bouncy bands. Having choice and the ability to move and sit in different ways will encourage my students to be more engaged and productive. I know these resources will help my students learn and grow more than we ever imagined!
