As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are constantly faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of these students are being raised in single parent homes, are wards of the state, live with extended families and are moved frequently between motels, apartments and shelters. In fact, 78% of the students in our school receive free and reduced lunch and several families do not have adequate food at home; therefore, these students are given basic food necessities on Friday afternoons to get them through the weekend. Despite these everyday obstacles, my students exhibit a resilience to engage in all aspects of education that are provided at our school. As a result of this perseverance, my dedication to my students is stronger, as is my will to ensure they have a safe and inspiring learning environment.
