Sitting all day isn't fun for anyone, let alone fifth grade students with a host of varying needs. My students would benefit greatly from the opportunity to get up and move around and find the most comfortable way for them to function. For some, that may be sitting in a traditional seat. For others it may mean sitting on a stability ball, standing at a table, laying on a yoga mat, curling up in a comfy chair, rocking on wobble board, or simple sitting on a big pillow under a table somewhere. Learning to choose the best spot for their own learning is a responsibility they will learn to take seriously, and staying organized will be a key feature to its success. My greatest focus as a teacher is always to find what works best for each of my students and then find a way to accommodate that style to the best of my abilities. What I found most with my students, was their need to move. Allowing my students to choose the best way for them to learn will give them the opportunity to succeed. Maybe they will lay down to read, sit on a ball for math and stand at a table for science. They will have options and opportunities to move. As they move they will work in cooperative groups, learning to synergize and be responsible for their choices. Organization will be key to the success of classroom management in this type of setting. Students will need to share materials at cooperative groupings. Our school is a Leader in Me school, utilizing data binders for each student to track progress toward their goals. The binder station is to keep their data binders organized. Students will be learning to be responsible for their choices and their learning.
