The fifth graders, who are in their first year of middle school, are often absent because of traveling hardships, housing crises, and a need to take care of their younger siblings. Even though the students cannot control the absences, they must make up their missed assignments and attend office hours in order to keep up with their education. The fifth grade homerooms would like to institute a mailbox policy: students will be able to go to one place to pick up missing work, notes, and information from all of their teachers. This will help the students be accountable for their own learning, stay on top of the work, and feel successful in their ability to advocate for themselves.
