These novels will allow our students to read the rich literature of other cultures. We are encouraging our students to see the danger of a single story, looking at only one perspective limits the student from exploring the dominant cultures outsides of their own classroom, the dominant cultures that also exist outside of the United States. Our poetry unit is very popular. Bronx Masquerade, by Nikki Giovanni, will be used in this unit to reflect the cultural differences in our society. The author uses poetry to tell the stories of each character in the novel. There is certainly no danger of a single story in this book.
