These hands-on materials will enhance our current classroom curriculum because they will add new and exciting learning opportunities for my at-risk students to master preschool math skills. My classroom is in desperate need of engaging manipulatives and games for teaching number and operations, patterning, shapes, and comparing and measuring. This will be done in small group, large group, and individual settings. The materials will help ensure that my students will achieve the ultimate goal of Kindergarten readiness in all of the math objective areas. Having adequate materials for learning math concepts will put my students on an even playing field as their non-at-risk peers when they enter Kindergarten. Here are some examples of how these materials will be used: The measurement centers complete set will allow me to teach/students to learn and explore with measuring length, weight, and volume. They will learn vocabulary of longer/shorter, heavier/lighter, and fuller/emptier. The counting box set will allow me to teach/students to learn about number recognition, counting, and quantifying numbers 1-10. The spin and count to 20 set will allow students to learn number recognition and counting within a game setting. The different types of counters (manipulatives) will allow me to teach/ students to learn about: sorting into groups by type or color, counting, quantifying, and comparing two sets of groups of counters by more/less than, and patterning by type or color. The pan scale allows children to explore weight of objects and compare and measure concepts of heavier/lighter. The geometric foam shapes will promote 3D shape recognition as well as patterning by type or color, and counting and comparing groups of more/less than. All of these materials can be used in a small group, large group, individual, and play-based setting and offer endless new possibilities for learning math concepts.
