My classroom is made up of students from a variety of grades and they have emotional disabilities and behavioral challenges. They have a variety of needs and would greatly benefit from the ability to work where they are comfortable and can be successful. Not all kids learn the same way and they don't always know how they learn best. Using flexible seating gives students ownership of choosing where they will learn best and be successful. During independent worktimes, students can become bored or disruptive if working at their desks. To accommodate for their needs, the students are currently working in a variety of places around the room: sitting or laying on the floor using a clipboard and under tables using clipboards. Allowing students the ability to choose where to work has increased their motivation and improves their on-task time. I have seen amazing results with the use of flexible seating. Flexible seating has increased student engagement, motivation, and stamina when working on assignments. The students have also become less disruptive to their peers when working where they are most comfortable. If I can provide them with the ability to work and learn in a more comfortable place then they will be more successful. The flexible seating that I have selected will provide the students with more opportunities to work around the classroom. The seating is comfortable and appropriate for their age and size. With having a mix of grades, I selected seating which would be appropriate for their age and needs. The beanbag chairs and floor seats will allow the students to sit around the room and work comfortably. The wobble stools are adjustable and appropriate for the desks or the U-table. I have seen how providing the students with choices in the classroom can positively impact the learning environment!
