With a keyboard lab my students will learn to read music and play the keyboard. Studies have shown that learning to play an instrument improves cognitive function. According to a study performed by “Music and the Brain,” research has also shown that learning music increases test scores in various subjects. For example, in a particular pilot study of Music and the Brain, two groups of kindergarten children were pretested and post tested in vocabulary, identification of letters and words, comprehension, calculation and quantitative concepts. One set of students received extra instruction in learning to read and play music using a keyboard. The other set of students received extra instruction in language arts. The students with supplemental keyboard instruction out performed the students with extra language arts instruction. My students will benefit tremendously from the use of keyboards in the music class room which will lead to cognitive growth in general subject areas. Students desperately want to play the only piano that I have in the music classroom but this is an impossible task being that there is one piano and approximately 25 children in each class. This keyboard lab will spark a new excitement for learning that will send vibrations throughout their entire educational experience.
