Did you know that there is an over-representation of African American students receiving special education services across the nation? Many of my students have been mislabeled as having either ADD, ADHD, ED (emotional disturbance), DD (developmental delay), or multiple disabilities.
In fact, 75% of my rising 7th grade class have IEPs and nearly 40% of my rising 6th grade class have been through the STAT process to seek eligibility from previous teachers with 25% of the class already having an IEP.
I need your help! Most of the items for this project are going to aide in my launch of flexible seating in the classroom. Rather than automatically recommending a student for special education services because of his or her lack of focus, I want to empower students to take control of their educational experience and attention span through choice. With intentional planning and management, flexible seating allows students to choose a place in the classroom that best fits their learning needs in order to be productive.
I have researched several alternative seating options (exercise balls, desk leg bands, titling chairs and cushions), which increases student engagement and focus. The noise cancelling headphones will let students concentrate more during independent reading or work time and even during testing. Finally, this project will also help me to get a class set of scissors, glue, and pencils as I begin my first year of teaching. With your help, I can focus more on supporting students emotionally and creating authentic experiences in the classroom.
Thank you so much for your support!
