I want to make reading and learning about the history of our country fun for my students. I plan on doing novel studies with realistic fiction books that my students can relate to. I chose titles that help with social issues, the revolutionary war, westward expansion, and the civil war. I asked for a copy for each of my students so that they may be able to take them home and share what we talked about during class. I like to use novels when teaching social studies because these stories really let my students imagine what life was like during these times in our country's history. All of the titles I chose have main characters who are around the same age at the children I am teaching. I feel this will give my students a better understanding of what life may have been for them.
