Kindergartners love to explore by building, creating, and trying new activities that are hands on. Their favorite time of the day is when they are allowed free choice center time. I want to create centers where students are given materials like building blocks, magnets, and pictures of constructions. They can then map out how they would reconstruct a building, or a car, space ship, boat, etc. These are things that they already love to do. Many times students build and then tell me what it is. I want students to think about what they are building first. So as they construct they can problem solve.
Students will design and build with the engineer kit, creating vehicles, bridges, and houses. Each engineering kit comes with real life pictures of bridges, vehicles, buildings. These images inspire the students, but also giving them different ideas that not all bridges look alike. So with the given building materials they can then construct their idea of a vehicle, or house, or bridge. With the magnet kit students will explore magnets with the use of the question cards they will then be able to test out their hypothesis and investigate how magnets work. With the family engagement pack my goal is to allow students to take home an activity to do with their family. Many of my students do not have opportunities or resources at home. The other kits will offer more opportunities for critical thinking during play. Kindergartners learn best in a play based environment, which is what I hope to create with these added materials.
