  • Books Centering My Students Stories, Paper, and Action Civics Supplies!

    Funded Mar 28, 2024

I hope your summers are going well. I wanted to reach out to share how grateful I am for your ongoing support of our classroom and my students.

Thank you for helping to fill our bookshelves with new titles about immigrant students from around the world. As I have the honor and joy of teaching recent immigrant and refugee students from all across the world, it is particularly important for me that we have books and stories that reflect my students stories and that my students can see themselves in the pages and shelves of our classroom. I really appreciate your help in getting these powerful new stories for my class and already many students are checking them out!

I'm also so grateful for your help in getting the supplies we needed to conduct and share our semester long action civics work. This spring my students presented their work at a statewide event and got recognized at the state-level! Thank you so much for all your support of our work both in and out of the classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

  • Fidget Toys to Help Students Study

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity in helping us fill our box of fidget toys so our students have things that they can fidget with while they learn. Each day the students are using them and it is wonderful to now have a box that has enough toys for every student in a class to be able to have something to fidget with to help them focus.

The fidget box sits in our "Calm Corner" under a big paper tree and surrounded by plants that create a calm space for students who are having a hard day.

I really appreciate your help in making our classroom a warm, welcoming and inviting space for all our students.”

  • Setting Up For a Successful Year!

    Funded Sep 18, 2023

Thank you so much for helping us set up for a successful year. All the things you helped supply for our class have been used! The cough drops are a big hit - particularly as the cold weather sets in. The container sits on my desk and every day students are taking them now.

And all the plates and cutlery and cups were used for our big Tasting History Event. We start off the school year with our unit on immigration studying the history of immigrants from 100 years ago. Our final project centers our students expertise and provides them an opportunity to share their stories and histories. At the end of the project they share their favorite family recipes with their classmates and build connections with their classmates. We used all the plates/cups/utensils for this final celebration!

Thank you all for your help and support of our class!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

  • Books Celebrating Immigrant Voices and a Calming Space to Learn!

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Thank you so so so much for helping us build our Social Justice LIbrary - this was a dream I had a number of years ago and it is only thanks to donors like you that we have been able to build out a beautiful library in our classroom filled with more than 250 titles sharing the stories of immigrant and refugee students.

I have the honor and joy of teaching students from all around the world. It is so important that my students see themselves represented in the shelves of our classroom and that they can read stories of young people who share experience with them and they can read stories of young people like those of their classmates and new friends.

Thank you for helping us create this library!”

  • Healthy Students and Vibrant Classrooms!

    Funded Feb 27, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to my classroom and for supporting our amazing students.

The supplies you helped us buy helped keep my students healthy - the cough drops fly out of my classroom at a rapid rate! Truly they helped us get through the winter. I keep a large jar on my classroom desk and kids are dipping into to grab a cough drop every class period.

And the pots brought our classroom to life carrying inside them beautiful plants that brought energy and green into our space. I'm excited to bring even more plants into our classroom in the coming weeks!

Thank you so much for supporting our learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

  • Keeping My Kids Healthy and Bringing Smiles

    Funded Nov 13, 2022

Thank you all so much for your support of my students and our classroom. The cough drops are already flying out the glass container on my desk -its that season - lots of colds. And students find it really helpful to be able to have cough drops right in the classroom. And my students have been really excited about the new stress balls they can use that help them focus in our class. These might seem like small things but they go along way to helping us together creating a space that is supportive and caring and where then together we can do our best learning.

I really appreciate all your support and help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

  • Expanding Our Social Justice Library Plus Stocking Creative/Healthy Classroom

    Funded Sep 7, 2022

With your help the Calm Corner in our classroom has taken on a new life with the beautiful rug that centers the space. The rug has only been in place for a week but already every day students are sitting on it and working in it with a stack of pillows propping up their computers. And our library is now expanded - so much so that I had to find another book case to hold all the powerful titles! I'm really excited for students to check these books out! Thank you for helping to transform our classroom for the start of the school year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

  • Continuing to Building Out My Social Justice Library

    Funded May 5, 2022

Thank you so much for helping to support our classroom and learners by helping us build out our Social Justice Library and add all these new and powerful titles to our collection. One day a week last year in a specific class I teach was designated to reading and each student was able to choose a book that spoke to them. Many of them at the beginning of the year said they "weren't readers" and it was powerful to watch them engage in important books where they saw themselves and realize that just maybe they were indeed readers! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

  • New Year, New Supplies for Our Class!

    Funded Jan 28, 2022

Thank you so much for your powerful generosity in helping my class.

It has been absolutely wonderful to be able to add the new titles to our Social Justice Library and to have so many students be able to learn from the wisdom of these books.

And then the organizing storage boxes have been so helpful in creating a less cluttered, calmer area of the room where supplies are easy to find by everyone in the class and easy to put away when not in use.

My students too love the new stress and fidget balls - the box of stress balls gets passed around every day in my classes!

I so thank everyone who helped contribute and added brightness (and also some organization) to our classroom this spring.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lander

Hi everyone! I am a high school history and civics teacher teaching all recent immigrant and refugee students from more than thirty countries around the world. Our community was very hard hit during COVID and as we return to school, most of my students will be entering the building for the first time in more than 18 months -- in light of this, I am completely re-organizing and re-thinking my classroom this year. I created a "calm corner" to center our Social Emotional Learning work, we now have a social justice library for my students, and I also want to help be thoughtful and intentional about teaching my students how to organize their learning this year. To do this last component I would like binders for each student. We will use these to organize their notes and materials, and also intentionally talk about how we build organization strategies to carry into college and careers. Many of my students were and are essential workers during the pandemic and I don't want there to be an economic barrier for some students being able to afford binders and some not. In a year that I know will be difficult and challenging for my students, my hope is that these binders will be a small but important way to help create structures and supports for their learning as they return to school.
