Dealing with ADHD in the Classroom
Funded Nov 2, 2017The alternative seating arrangement in the classroom makes coming to class more fun. The students love to sit on any of the variety of stools and comfortable chairs we have. The regular chairs rarely get used and kids can move around quietly in their seats without distracting others. It helps them to stay focused and still expend some energy at the same time. This has really helped the kids make better in science class as they now can clearly hear directions and expectations. Before, we made noises rocking in chairs that are not designed to rock. The traditional chairs squeak and make noises the alternative stools do not make. They are much quieter.
The most exciting thing for the children is the fact that it is actually fun just to sit on the stools. They bounce at first, but quickly realize the stools force them to sit up straight and will improve their posture. Instead of having to sit perfectly still, you have the freedom to move around, but at the same time you are not going anywhere. I also use the stools to make the children behave. If someone is misbehaving, they do not get to sit on any of the stools that day.
I believe the students who have ADD benefit the most from alternative seating. These boys and girls just have the "wiggles". They NEED to move around and can not be still for any length of time at all. The effect it has on them is significant. After bouncing for a minute, they can relax and complete work they were not getting done before. Children with extra energy are often really smart and just need to discover how to cope with a racing motor of a brain. It can be extremely difficult to manage so many emotions at once. Anything that has a calming effect on these children can only help.
Thank you so much for funding our project and helping our school. We appreciate everything you did for us.”
