Students will be using the flexible seating options in my classroom to not only motivate their learning but to provide comfort and focus. Students enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a flexible seating environment. I aim to promote problem solving and higher order thinking by allowing students the ability to chose their seating preference.
Many students benefit from different options of seating within the classroom to help their focus and reduce stress. With knowledge about anxiety, ADHD, and autism, I have come to understand that the needs of many students go beyond a traditional desk/chair in a classroom environment. I want my students to relax and learn in an environment that promotes their best state of mind.
Some of the seating options I have planned include inflatable seating around the library area and located on a fun colorful rug. Students will be able to sit comfortably with a clipboard during work, sit together while brainstorming and planning, or simply find a comfy spot to read. I also have planned for sensory seating that can be used in regular chairs or on the floor for those students who prefer the bumpy and rounded top of a balance pod. There will also be balance balls and balance stools to sit on that can be used at a desk or table. The balancing needed for these chairs enhances focus while still allowing students the freedom of movement and good posture. I have also included a second rug in the list of items for my flexible seating classroom because I know from experience that some students simply appreciate the ability to stretch out on the floor while they work. The scoop rockers are another flexible seating option that will allow students to also choose the location of their seating just about anywhere in the classroom.
