Beyond the Bell is a homework club that runs two times a week all school year. We provide a safe place where 9th grade students can come for academic support after school with the help of teachers and counselors. Given our low income demographic, students need school supplies and after school snacks to help support their academic a success! A lot of students receive the majority of their meals through the school. Knowing that students perform much better with full stomachs, we would like to provide snacks and beverages at the club. Many students also don't have necessary school supplies due to lack of resources. The pens, pencils, crayons, and colored pencils will provide them with the tools needed to complete assignments and projects, and folders will help to keep students' school work organized. I have observed that some students do not have back packs. In our district, students are to walk to school if they are up to two miles away. The backpacks will help those students to transport all their work safely, especially in inclement weather. Additionally, due to the distance some of our students walk, many tend to be tardy. To help students get to school on time, in addition to incentivizing attendance and hard work at the club, we would like to have a raffle a HOMPOT (color changing alarm clock/night light/speaker) on a quarterly basis. Last year was the first year Beyond the Bell ran. Promotion rates from 9th to 10th grade for that school year raised to 91%- a 6% increase from the year before! With the help of this grant, we will be able to support more of our students in their journey to success and raise the promotion rate even higher!
