An area rug will give my students a central zone for learning and collaborating. We will have a consistent space to meet for mini-lessons, read alouds, group work, and sharing. This space will increase the inclusive nature of our classroom community. Proximity to the teacher is a huge factor in students' learning. By providing a space for all students to experience this proximity, I will be able to better reach my entire class. Outside of whole group learning, a rug creates an area for students to meet in independent groups as well as to sit more comfortably while reading. This flexible seating allows students a choice in where they learn.
