I am asking for a variety of alternate seating options for my first graders. Recent research suggests that for children with attention disorders, moving, spinning and bouncing in their chairs correlated with better performance. Last year I self-funded my start to alternate seating and I never want to go back to traditional seating. Each day my students pick spots where they can be successful. I noticed I had a class full of happy and motivated students. I have some things but would like to expand to meet the needs of every student. My school is working very hard to establish a culture of curiosity and self-directed learning that works with each of our learners. By having chairs that are more comfortable and more mobile, I believe that the ability to remain on task and focused will multiply. Students that are happy, comfortable and engaged are better learners. Teaching, by nature, is a creative profession. By allowing my students to choose seating that is specific to their needs, such as stability balls, stability discs, wobble seats, and scoop chairs, I am giving them the ability to choose what is best for them. Children are naturally different and diverse, and just like one-size education doesn't fit all, neither do chairs.
