Where do you work best? For me, its curled up in a comfy chair. For others, its standing, or an open space that allows for movement. Believe it or not, some people produce their highest quality of work sprawled out on the floor. Very few people consider working at a traditional desk their ideal work environment. Even less are thrilled by the idea of spending the majority of their day at that same desk, with no option for change or movement.
Choice is a powerful tool that motivates students and increases their engagement in the learning process . Every student is unique and has his or her own preferential learning environment. When students are given the ability to choose their work space, they are invited to take control of their education. Flexible seating encourages students to reflect and decide where they learn best, but it also challenges students to be aware when a particular spot is not working.
Flexible seating in the classroom, is providing students with a variety of learning environments, and allowing students to choose where they work best. I am looking to increase the seating options in my classroom, by adding yoga balls, that allow students to get their wiggles out in an non-distracting way. I would also like to add beanbag chairs, to create a comfortable learning nook. Finally, I would like to purchase bouncy bands, so that students can fidget in a non-distracting way at a traditional desk. Flexible seating empowers students to make decisions regarding their education. Flexible seating allows for cooperation, problem solving and critical thinking. My goal is to help fifth graders become more self-aware and realize that they themselves are the most important factor to achieving success in education.
