My goal as an elementary educator is to create a comfortable learning community, where every student can learn, and diversity is celebrated. Creating a comfortable learning community is the foundation of my teaching, if students do not feel comfortable in our classroom they are less likely to be successful. Many of my students share their bedroom with their siblings. By 4th and 5th grade kids are wanting their own space and independence, which they may not have at home. We need stools, balance balls and laptrays for flexible seating that will give my students control over their learning environment. Flexible seating provides students the environment they need to be their best. The more choice students have the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. When I give my students choice I see greater engagement, more excitement, and higher desire to learn. Their effort increases and there is a greater amount of pride that comes out of their work. Students will have the choice of standing, kneeling, sitting around the room, or balancing on a stability ball while doing their best. Students are able to engage in a task longer when they are not confined to a hard desk chair.
