I am currently teaching in a large school in a poor Brooklyn community. My first grade bilingual students are eager to learn and all twenty of them have not had many if any experiences outside of their community. Some have not even ventured to other boroughs. This limited experience makes them feel like the world is so small. They haven't had many experiences with other cultures except for the rich Hispanic background they share.
