A Root To Knowledge

Funded Jan 4, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for your help in beginning this exciting educational project. The Greenhouse has become the heart of our school. My students have learned so much about plants and look forward to learning more. Your donation of planting stands and planting trays and pots has enabled my students to learn about science hands-on. Hands-on teaching and learning is so important for children and sometimes overlooked due to time restraints and cost. The students have become motivated to learn more about plants and are doing research on their own which is an amazing accomplishment. At the parent/teacher meetings the parents have expressed their delight in hearing their children talk about science at home and ask for science books and time to do research on the internet.

The success of the Greenhouse has lead to two extra learning experiences for my students. Your donation of planting equipment has allowed my students the opportunity to research plants to support the lifecycle of butterflies. They discovered that painted lady butterflies lay their eggs on mallow plants. Using your donated materials, we have planted mallow plants and now added a butterfly tent to our Greenhouse that is home to 2 generations of painted lady butterflies to date. Also the students have enjoyed planting herbs for their smell and nutritional value. When we grew an abundance of herbs the students decided to sell the herbs at the monthly PTA meetings. They sell the plants for 25 cents each and earned $31.00 so far. I gave them a list of prices for soil and seeds so they could figure out what supplies to buy with the money they earn. What an exciting learning experience this has been!

Once again, I cannot thank you enough. I had so much trouble deciding which 6 photos to post because I have so many wonderful experiences on film. The staff at our school is thrilled with the Greenhouse project and the educational experience it has brought to our students. Your donation will continue to enhance the learning experience of children for years to come because the Greenhouse is here to stay at our school.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Frankel
