Whether a student is interested in cosmetology, information technology, plumbing, or cooking, most young adults will find employment with a small business at some point in time. The Entrepreneurship project will help students understand and master the workplace behaviors and communication skills they need to be effective small business employees and successful adults. Students will have the skills necessary to "earn while they learn". This project will give students the workplace skills they need to succeed on the job, and the academic foundation they need to continue forward in their education through team collaboration, time management exercises, and independent study practices.
With unlimited mobility from the iPads, students will have unlimited access to self-assessments that will help students practice and master key workplace "soft skills" that employers believe are essential to students attaining entry-level employment and succeeding on the job. Students will utilize internet resources to explore and learn about different types of business capital, how to apply for different types of loans, and the costs of different types of small business loans. The iPads will provide students with a hands-on experience on how to register a start-up company with the Louisiana Secretary of State, using the student version of the geauxBIZ portal. This technology will also grant virtual, video access to connections with local entrepreneurs, businesses, and community education partners. Mobile capability will grant students access to mobile applications not accessible on desktop computers that are used in modern businesses for daily transactions, inventory control, and record keeping. Students will be better able to practice business transactions in a retail environment through hands-on simulation.
All other activities, and those listed above, performed on the iPads will help to increase student knowledge of financial concepts and terms essential to small business success.
